As far as I know, that's generally seen with a pseudobulbar palsy resulting from degenerative disease but it could conceivably result from a stroke affecting the frontal lobes. I don't believe it's common at all.
What happens when a patient shows up to the ED with uncontrollable crying and w/o any history or any signs of any trauma or path? Would the ED immediately call a psych consult in this case?

Not sure what the Emerg Doc would do in this situation but I'm pretty sure that a TIA would not be high on his differential dx! 😉
