Hello all,

I am interested in pursuing sports and spine type positions compared to traditional pain management jobs. Anyone currently in or have previously been in a sports and spine job and want to touch on the difference between the two set ups in terms of compensation and practice set ups? Do you prefer one or the other? How did you negotiate your set up? And if one is to pursue the former, how hard is it to maintain a split in patient populations?

Are you PM&R with interventional pain fellowship training?

You can do this in several settings, but most commonly would be in an ortho group where you would get a good number of spine and sports referrals. Main thing you need to understand is that sports stuff tends to reimburse much less than spine stuff from both a collection and RVU standpoint. Only way to offset that would be to have a busy regen component. Also sports patients tend to take up way more time with return to play issues and trainers hitting you up if you do sports coverage. One of my partners did a PM&R sports fellowship that included spine so he does both, but our collection numbers are very different at least in part due to the sports stuff he does. This is very important if you are in a PP with a high overhead.
