Hi, I am currently in my Junior year and I am planning to take the MCAT this coming April. My grades are a bit lower than normal (3.1 GPA). I have shadowed at a small family medical practice and have done other small volunteer jobs. My question is how does playing a Division 1 sport through college affect your application. Obviously it will not alone get me accepted but right now I am just trying to see where I stand. Thanks in advance.

Nothing guarantees admission, but involvement in any kind of EC activity will definitely be a feather in your cap. A large portion of my personal narrative involved running (I do ultra-marathons). If the sports have played a significant role in forming who you are as a person, then all the better. Things like focus, time management, teamwork, and perseverance are all looked favorably upon.
Keep in mind that I am applying this year, so I may not have the magic formula...time will tell

I would tend to agree with the previous post. I played baseball all four years in college and was asked (at several places) about how I managed to keep my grades up-- time management and hard work. The athletic aspect of my application appeared to be grounds for a variety of questions, particularily about time management (which you ABSOLUTELY need in med school), familiarizing myself with different personalities and how it requires hard work. Altogether, playing college athletics can only help your application...so good luck!

Being a good sport/team member in Atheletics translates to being a good team member of other activities including medicine. It will help your application...

Unless you are completely clueless and don't know how to spin that angle. Commit, Organize, balance, succeed, push your limits.. yada yada yada...
