A spring has a spring constant of 100 N/cm. How much wok is required to alter the spring from a compression of 10cm to a compression of 50 cm.

The answer is 1,200 J which I have no earthly idea why.

1/2(10000N/m)(.50m)^2-1/2(10000N/m)(.10m)^2 = 1200J

just make sure to convert everything to meters,
