I got a FREE Palm Treo 755p the other day. It says Sprint on the front of it, and I have a U.S. Cellular network. Is there any way I can use a Sprint phone on the U.S. Cellular network? I know they're both CDMA, but I don't know if that means it will or not.

I guess I shouldn't have bothered answering you in The Lounge thread you started then...

So you are sure it is? What if my carrier tells me it isn't? Then what?

I have this horrible fear they're going to tell me, "We can, but we won't." I want to know what to do then.

They have no reason not to. If they don't then they won't there is nothing you can do about it then.

It won't work. I found a message on my phone that says, "This network service has been pre-installed by your mobile service provider, and cannot be edited."

Crap. I wonder if anyone wants to buy it...

A random message doesn't mean anything. There may be sprint specific services you can't access on US Cellular, but it only relates to that service. It also may just have to be unlocked, as I mentioned in the other thread.

All I could find on unlocking CDMA phones was this...

CDMA phones have handset locks and also have to be individually authenticated by their networks.

So even if you unlock a CDMA phone, it won't work if it isn't on the serial number list of the network you're bringing it to. The carriers won't add individual new serial numbers to their networks.

Representatives of Sprint and Alltel said that banning other carriers' phones protects the user experience on their networks.

Has anyone out there unlocked a CDMA phone and used it on another network?
