SPS program helpful?? Advice needed!

Hi All!

I plan on applying for medical school next year (graduated last year in 2016, work in clinical research now), and will be applying MD and DO with an unimpressive 3.6 uGPA and 3.4 sGPA. The institution I'm at (top 15) offers an SPS program (upper level science courses that I haven't taken during undergrad) that I would be able to start this fall and complete by the time I submitted my application (6 courses).

I'm wondering if anyone here had experience with enrolling into these programs, and if you all thought that this would be useful to my application granted I do well in all of the classes. I'll be applying with pretty strong extra circulars/experience/LORs, and I am really striving for a good MD program.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

512 on the MCAT...I'm just a little worried that my score paired with my undergrad GPA won't be enough to push me over the edge when it comes to admissions (especially for me dream/top programs)

without knowing your MCAT, grade trends, and the rest, having 6 advanced science courses, with good grades, sort of as a "mini" post bacc would be helpful especially since your science GPA is a bit below

Thanks for letting me know! Low GPA is because of bad freshman year (finished with a measly 3.2) but was able to make the deans list every semester after. Pretty good upward trend, and the only concerning science grades I have are a C+ and B- in chem 101 (freshman) and biochem (junior) respectively, and thankfully the rest high B's and A's! I know the biochem score is especially concerning, which is why I'm sort of confused as to what would be the best option for me.

Yes a bunch of additional good grades in science classes would be helpful for the 3.4 sGPA

Also wondering if the 6 classes I would take as part of the certificate would be considered "enough" by medical schools (granted I receive top grades) in regards to showcasing my capability.

Yes, you're only a little low so 3.8+ for 6 semesters of upper levels would be great.
