I happen to know of several patients who have taken THC (marijuana) while concurrently taking SSRI medications daily. WIth large doses of SSRIs (ie 300 mg Luvox and 80 mg Celexa per day), is there contraindication? I am not familiar with the pharmacology of THC, and how it affects serotonin production and receptors.

Don't smoke weed, it's a no no.

Fortunately or unfortunately, tetrahydrocannabinol (active metabolite = 11-hydroxy-delta9-THC), the active ingredient in marijuana, has few drug interactions. One established one is that disulfiram will increase serum blood levels of THC.

It primarily acts on the monoamine and GABA neurons.

Animal studies show that THC can excite monoamine oxidase activity. One could make the comparative leap that excessive pot use in the setting of ssri use would cause the ssri to therefore be less effective clinically.

From personal experience, it's simpler to say that a heavy pot user tends to be depressed from de bono effects of the marijuana, aside from the pharmacological interactive effects of the ssri.

What "personal experience" are you referring too, there? 😉
