I was just wondering if anyone had any information on this General Surgery Program. I received my first interview there for October 20th and I was just curious if someone had some inside information.

I tried scut work, but this program is not even listed. They have St. Joseph Mercy Hospital program, but thats in Ann Arbor, MI and affiliated with U of M. St. Joseph Mercy Oakland is in Pontiac, MI and affiliated with Wayne State Univ. Here is the website...

The website gives some information, but not a lot. They do not post their current residents, no listing of graduates and where they have gone or anything like that. However their ABSITE scores are rather good...they have a 90% pass rate (im assuming thats good).

Thanks for your help.

I interviewed there last year, but didn't match. I remembered the stats being pretty good in terms of caseload. They had just opened up a brand new Surgery Center as well. It seemed like a good community program overall, especially if you're interested in becoming a bread-and-butter general surgeon.

The Chief at that program runs his/her own clinic and gets cases that way. Otherwise, the residents operate on private patients of the attendings who, for the most part, are private practice, as opposed to being employed by the program.

The residents that we met on interview day all seemed pretty chill. The interns that served as tour guides did introduce themselves as "Dr. so and so" as opposed to just using their first names. Kind of a turnoff. I interviewed at bigger, more academic programs in which the Chiefs introduced themselves by their first names, so I was taken aback by the interns there.

The program otherwise seemed pretty good. The PD was very warm and friendly, and made the interview very laidback. The program does interview a lot of IMG's and DO's, so it's one of the few places where "the rest of us" stand a decent chance of matching into an ACGME program.

Lastly, the restaurant we dined at the night before interviews was amazing! Priciest menu that I had ever personally laid eyes on. And yes, I took full advantage!
