For current USC pharm students, do u guys get enough loans?

Someone mentioned that one number for the total estimated cost incl. all the fees and housing etc.. what was it? 42K? 46K? Thats way over the max of stafford.. I remember Jesse from finaid saying that we'll probably have to take out private loans.. 😳

Ugh.. and tuition goes up 5%/year

 unf*believable. i can't even cry.

speaking of USC loans, I've never recieved my financial aid package and I still haven't heard from housing either 😕

I thought financial aid stuff come out in July, no? As for housing... maybe you should call them? If you're goin for Seaver try calling (323) 442-1576 - but they may be closed since school is over.. in that case call housing services at (800) 872-4632 or (213) 740-2546 🙂

Housing contracts come out end of May. We'll probably get our assignment next week. Did you ever get a little postcard from them saying they got your housing application?

The financial aid deadline to get all stuff in was May 5th. I don't know when they notify us about how much financial aid we get.

oh yeah, gonna love those private loans 👎

Those deadlines are not really deadlines.....they just don't tell you that...this year I had to turn in the same paper three times since they lost it, and the last time was last week. I suggest everyone checks oasis financial aid document status to make sure everything was logged in by the financial aid office. If my memory serves me right, I think the fin aid package came somewhere end of June- beginning of July last year. You can always check on oasis if the review was completed, once it is, you'll get the whole package by mail

so how much can you get, 18.5K? 30K? 38.5K? assuming u already have a BS

I seem to recall you could get ~28K unsubsidized and I know you can get 8.5K max subsidized............ per year.

The max for subsidized is 8.5K and unsubsidized 22,500 per year. There is also Perkins with a max of 2K per year and some professional loans that you have to qualify for and since I don't, I am not sure what the max is. The rest is private loans.

I thought if you’re a graduate student, you can only borrow up to $18,500 each academic year. (Only $8,500 of this amount may be in subsidized Stafford Loans.) Where did you get the 22,500 max amount?
Mercer tells me that as an independent student w/ a B.S I am only eligible to borrow $18,500 per year. But students in Pharmacy school and certain other medical professions are allowed to borrow a little more, and therefore I got a total of $23,000 ($5,500 subzidized and $17,500 in unsubsidized).

I think all graduate medical professions are able to get more than the standard 18.5k. That amount is for GRADUATE students. PharmD, MD, DO, etc are not graduate programs, they are professional programs. Medical schools allows for up to 38.5k in stafford loans, even more if the school year is more than 9 months. So if your pharm school should allow more than 18.5k, 31K is more like it.

At my school, I was also allowed 8,500 in subsidized and 22,500 in unsubsidized loans as a pharmacy student.

I guess since Mercer considers First and Second Year Pharmacy students as undergraduates I only get the $10,500 maximum plus the additional $12,500 in Unsubsidized Loans for a 9-month Academic year. This really sucks, I could really use that additional $8000.00. Now time to find a private loan to cover the additional costs.

I've heard so many different things regarding this....do the pharmacy schools in any way determine what a pharmacy school's maximum Stafford Loan is? I borrowed about $23,000 for undergraduate (unsubsidized only)...
I am not counting on getting anything subsidized because I've never qualified in the past. But is there a set amount of money that a pharmacy student can take out (through Federal Stafford) that you can count on? Is it 38.5K or 31K yearly or does this all depend? I know subsidized probably varies depending on need but what about unsubsidized?
Thanks, sorry so long!!!
