i have been accepted to both schools and cannt decided which one to go to. i need ur input or if you guys have heard something about these schools please let me know.
1) both the schools are brand new and I would be in the inaugural
class, both are three years, saint Joesph is located in
Connecticut while Roosevelt is located in Illinois.
2) the only thing that scares me is that i would be in the
inaugural class, what happens if they dont get accredited , which i have to go to pharm school again to become a
pharmacist. have u guys heard/know anything about the
accredited process please let me know. or if they become a
accredited a year after i graduate does that mean that i
cannot practice or become a licensed pharmacist until
they are fully accredited.
3) or did some of u attend pharmacy school as its
inaugural class; how was it, did they school get
accredited on their first try.
please help me anything you can tell me will be great
thanks in advance

I don't think it'll matter because a PharmD is a PharmD. Whether you get it from the Top school or worst (accredited) school, both degrees will be the same. So if you want to choose, base it off of location, people, etc etc.

And sorry, as I'm not aware of Inaugural schools.

Not so much, no matter what everyone tries to reassure you with. I take no interest in the rankings, but Roosevelt is basically a joke among Illinois pharmacy schools. When a pharmacy manager sees that's where an applicant graduated from, it's almost guarenteed to be a negative.

I know nothing about Saint Joseph's, but even so, I'd probably say go there without question.

hi can i ask why you say roosevelt is joke among other pharmacy schools. i personally find the staff very nice and helpful. i also like the curriculum.
i was just wondering is there a specific reason why roosevelt seems to be a joke ?
thanks

In short, they have no business opening up a pharmacy school. I have no doubt that the staff is friendly, they're trying to get you to go there, after all. There are no associated health programs at the school and I forsee them having a difficult time finding quality instructors and rotation spots. At last check, they had only hired 1/3 of their faculty and their classes are scheduled to start in July. That's pretty concerning.

As far as calling it a joke, those are unfortunately words of currently practicing pharmacists in the area (i.e. the ones doing the hiring), so it doesn't bode well.

At least regionally, the PharmD is a PharmD argument may be a thing of the past. To each their own, though.

Want it straight from Roosevelt regarding accreditation? "We do have several agreements with other Pharmacy programs to move our students into their programs if something catastrophic should happen. Students who are finished with the RU program can still sit for their boards and be licensed and ultimately receive their degree from a partner program."

There you have it!

Lol, that's actually a bit unnerving, almost as if your going into a surgery and hearing the surgeon say "hey listen, if I **** this up don't worry, another surgeon down the block will take care of you."

St. Joseph's reputation isn't so sparkling either. They are also a brand new school set to open last year but they had their accreditation denied (once? twice?) and accepted students were left out in the cold and some faculty left after the fiasco.

UCONN pharmacy school is real close by and from what I hear there certainly is no shortage of pharmacists in the area. WNEC is 20-30 minutes up the road in Springfield, MA too.

I never understood this. Every pharmacy school has the same core curriculum covering the same topics. The names of the classes or their sequence, regardless of how fancy they sound or if it's PHAR909, don't matter. The fact that a NAPLEX review is a final-year course at Roosevelt is pretty frightening.

I'd honestly be leery of going to either school - St. Joseph's has already had accreditation issues, both are stand-alones in saturated markets, both are three-year programs. Those are all red flags to me.

When did Saint Joseph get their pre-candidate status? This year or last year?
I guess what I'm asking is was Saint Joseph denied from getting candidate status or pre-candidate status last year?

Roosevelt stated that they have their Candidate Site visit set for next April and got their pre-candidate on one try. Is St. Josephs set to get candidate status?

I am in the same situation... Roosevelt VS Saint Joseph... I really like both school .. I like the blocked system and the class room style in Saint Joseph.. But with me, Roosevelt seem more stable and students can get connection with others people from different majors... I am really confused and don't know which school should I go to??? I read through all the post but still can't know which one ???

You guys should also consider the type of environment you want to live in. Chicago is a huge city, while West Hartford is a small town. West Hartford will be mostly Caucasians, while Chicago is a lot more diverse. Its the typical big city vs small town for college question.

Except St Joe's is in Hartford, not WH. Look into Hartford before going and assuming you'll be in old New England.

Except Roosevelt is in Shaumburg...which is 30 miles from Chicago and is strip-mall suburbia. Not much diversity there.

Any school that gets pre-candidate status will get a candidate site visti, so don't let them make you think they are special.

do you live in schaumburg? It is full of diversity especially cities surrounding it. Tons of polish, viets, indians, middle eastern ethnics, and europeans. But it is not as diverse as chicago proper.

Actually I did live in Schaumburg and it is not diverse... it is only known for Woodfield mall.

That's pretty sad if a town is most widely known for a shopping center. Do they have good sales?

I think it's accurate to say that there is more diversity in the area around Schaumberg than in the NE. But Schaumberg is truly in the burbs of Chicago. Not at all like being downtown, etc.

Looking at both schools' websites, I'm not terribly impressed.

It sounds like they might be wrong on both cities then! Granted, I don't know where St. Joe's is in Hartford, but some parts of the city are really not so nice. Some parts are nicer.

I do personally know 2 of the faculty members at St. Joe's, and I know that they will deeply care for their students. One was a mentor to me while in school and the other devotes herself to everything she does. Despite that, I have my doubts about the school at this point. Maybe in a few years once it is established I will change my mind.
