Hmm. I'm not a caffeine drinker, but drinking anything at all seems to keep me awake. You should see how many bottles of water I can get through!

Also, I try to take really short naps (after class) if I'm starting to nod off (in class).

Oooh, beware those days >24 hours. They'll mess you up for the next few days. Believe me, I spent 100 hours awake. It's not pretty.

I refuse to drink coffee. Refuse. I refuel by napping.

Caffeine screws me up bigtime! I dunno about you guys, but it pretty much destroys my normal sleep cycle. :/

Its not like that for me. Over the summer, for Welcome Back Weekend, I was participating in check in and had one cup of coffee. For the next couple of hours I was shaking. It was coffee with milk. That was fun.

Pick 4 or 5 songs that get you pumped. Whenever ya feel drained, blast em; even if it's just a few seconds worth. I have a couple electronica songs that are 9 mins of energy each.

Unless you were on some type of amphetamine, most likely a methamphetamine, then this just isn't something the body can handle. Once you pass a certain point your brain slips almost directly into REM sleep, so although you might have pulled what is close to 100 hours straight, it would have been interspersed with microburst REM naps. You might not even notice them, but if you watch the clock closely enough it will appear to skip, especially once you pass 50 hours.

Cheezer...coffee and pushups. Chuck Norris taught me that.

Nah, no drugs. Just crazy deadline pressure and fear of failure. Micronaps are possible, but like you said, I wouldn't notice. I spent the whole time coding. I am so glad I'm not majoring in computer engineering anymore.👍

Ah, pushups! That's a good one my art professor told me. Worked pretty well while I was studying for the MCAT!

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to reply to the OP...

I would say some strong a$$ coffee. I found a local coffee shop that brews stuff so strongly that it could be sold and marketed as an illicit street drug.

The Red bulls and Monsters make me feel a little strange, so I stick to coffee, but lots of it. Speaking of, I think I'm going to get some of that potent yummyness.

I hate stimulants. I become less focused and more annoyed by them.

This may sound cheesy but I actually meditate when I need energy and focus.

Coffee and a nap. Actually, nap first. I love coffee & can't get through the morning w/out one.

One time I made a mixture of coffee, Red Bull, Monster, Starbucks Espresso shot and various other energy drinks with my brother. I wouldn't suggest it though, cause even though I was awake I was peeing every 5 minutes.

When I need a break, I put on a favorite cd and take a long hot shower. I get really relaxed and warm and then.... I blast myself with freezing cold water 🙂 Then I go back to hot water and feeling cozy.

Plan B... Mountain Dew 🙂

**By the way, this is my 'coming out' post of sorts. I spend most of my waking hours on SDN reading and refreshing and laughing and crying, yet I never speak. It's been quite awhile now. So I'm gonna change that. Especially so I can write in the "officially going out of my damn mind" thread!!

 I did that for about a year. Then just had to start posting too. Glad you joined in. 🙂

I snack constantly to keep my blood sugar up. I also do 1 hr afternoon naps if I have the chance.

Thank you! I think I'm overly excited though... it offers me more entertainment while stewing in my stress/panic during this whole lovely 'waiting for interviews, please god let there be interviews' process

😉

Caffeine doesn't even affect me anymore. Maybe it's because of those everyday Starbucks runs I used to make

Vitamins, food, caffeine, exercise

I'm a napper. Never did the energy drink/coffee thing. I will take naps during the day if I'm running low, and if I'm staying up to study/work on something, I nap and work and nap and work until I'm done. Works well for me but I'm really good about waking up.

At work, I perfected being able to take multiple five minute naps when I'm really tired but have lots of mini procedures back to back that I can do half awake.

I like drinks with weird forms of caffeine, like yerba maté and guarana. I don't know if it's because the ones i drink tend to be lower sugar than regular soda, or if the caffeine is actually a better isomer or whatever the hell they claim, but the energy doesn't make me as jittery and doesn't leave me exhausted when it wears off like regular caffeinated drinks.

Oh yeah, and I try to actually sleep a decent amount every night and I avoid drinking caffeine after noon when I have something important the next day.

Sometimes when I'm real tired I will cook up a quick batch of meth in my lab (be careful though), I usually stay up for like a week straight but all I ever do is clean the floor over and over again.

👍 me too! but i've never met anyone who got through med school and residency without coffee. i hope it can be done.

... fail. 👎

Worked with a doc who didn't start drinking coffee until after his residency. He said he didn't really have time to think about how tired he was until it was all over. (finished residency within last 5 years)

I finally gave up staying away from caffeine, so my choice is Earl Grey caffeinated.

Im so sensitive to caffeine though, I can OD with two cups of it. The extreme nausea that kicks in keeps me away from anything stronger.

A good night's sleep is always best for me 👍
The time really matters too..

If I sleep at 3 and get up at 11, I feel really out of it and unlike myself. Even though it's still 8 hours, I'm much more lethargic and in a daze compared to sleeping at 12 and then getting up at 8.

I drink lots of water because I have noticed if I have to go to the bathroom it is very difficult to fall asleep. Sure you are slightly uncomfortable, but it works. I use it a lot when driving on long trips to keep from nodding off.

Staying hydrated is important, I think. It's hard to do anything when you're so thirsty it makes your blood pressure lower.

Also, eating well and regularly is crucial. "One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well." (my girl Virginia Woolf)

haha. totally the opposite for me. if i sleep late, any sleep is good. sleeping from 5-12 feels better than sleeping from 12-7. perhaps my clock is still a teenageer 😳
