How common are standalone pediatrics internships? I'm definitely applying into radiology with the thoughts to possibly specialize in pediatric radiology when it's all said and done. If I don't match to a categorical radiology program (for all 5 years), I need to find an internship, and it honestly sounds more appealing to do a pediatrics internship as opposed to internal medicine or even a transitional year.

I only know of OU's program, since I'm just now getting into the search, and they offer a "transitional pediatrics" year for folks matching into advanced positions. For instance, this year it's filled by a girl going into dermatology in July.

not very common. very few programs have it, like ou as you mentioned, i believe milwaukee has one spot too, which i believe went unfilled through the match this year. you can email programs in places you are interested and inquire about it. some places may be able to accept you for a year if for instance they lose a third year resident and need to fill the spot or something like that.

There are positions available listed through the NRMP as "pediatric preliminary" positions. You might be best to check with your rads program director and solicit other opinions though, I know for my friends doing anesthesia (with the eventual thought of Peds GAS), they were told that doing a pediatric prelim year would hurt them because of the amount of adults they would take care of during their residency. It might be the same for radiology.

UCSF - 1
U of Louisville - 3 (none filled in 2008)
Johns Hopkins - 2 (1 filled)
Mass General - 2 (1 filled)
Children's Mercy in KC - 2 (1 filled)
NYU - 1 (unfilled)
SUNY Brooklyn - 3
U of Rochester -1 (unfilled)
UNC - 1
Cincinnati Children's - 1
Oklahoma at OK City - 1
Oklahoma at Tulsa - 1
Geisinger PA - 2 (unfilled)
St Christopher's in PA - 2 (unfilled)
UT San Antonio - 1 (unfilled)
U of Washington - 1
Med College of Wisconsin - 2 (1 filled)

These do NOT include peds prelim programs specifically designated for child neuro (i.e. 2 prelim years)

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info. 🙂

Yeah, I haven't asked my advisor (one of the radiology faculty here) about my theoretical plans thus far. I figure if the American Board of Radiology is okay with future radiologists doing an internship in pediatrics (or pretty much anything, for that matter) than I should be fine. The only stipulation I've seen is that I can't do more than 3 months of any combination of radiology, radiation oncology, or pathology during internship if I want to be "board eligible", which is the whole point of doing residency, right?
