Anybody ever had a problem with their standby and hibernation functions on XP Pro? Everytime I try to put my laptop into anyone of these modes, it gets hungup, and I have to completely restart my computer. Any idea as to what may be causing this. Tried restoring to a prior set point, didn't work. Any other ideas? Only thing new on my comp is a new peripheral mouse.

Laptops, more than most other form factors, have a problem with this due to the way they are designed.

It could be just about anything causing it, hardware, software, drivers, etc...

The best place to start is to update your chipset drivers to the latest available revision, that most often than not solves the problem. If that doesn't work try updating the rest of the drivers for the hardware in your system. If that doesn't work then try disabling all the nonessential software that you have running in the background. If that still doesn't work your best bet would be to contact tech. support for the company that manufactures your laptop and find out if this is a common problem for the make/model you have and if they have any common solutions you could try.

It is possible that the Standby/Hibernate modes in XP may not be compatible with your make/model of laptop, just a flaw in the way the system was designed. It's unusual, but it has happened before.

I had a problem with Standby mode on my desktop (a Gateway PC): it would immediately turn back on no matter what I did. So I just got in the habit of putting it in Hibernate instead.

Then one day the problem just stopped. I think I installed whatever the latest service pack was at the time. But I still use Hibernate anyway--saves electricity.

Thanks for the reply. I upgraded the chipset, but that didn't help. Yesterday when I was trying to figure out the cause, I tried to boot from a previous restore point without any luck. I just tried again, from an earlier restore point and now the function is working. My mouse is working also, my anti-virus program has it's updates, so i have no idea what caused this issue. It's working now, but who knows if it'll act up again. Weird.
