Does anyone know much about this program?

I did a search, and there isn't much info.
It's 9 months, real expensive, GRE required, and you can take *some* med school courses.

Their website doesn't have any much additional information, and their admissions office doesn't seem to have any facts either. They seemed to say you could petition to take more med courses... but were unsure how likely one was to be granted the request.

Does anyone know how it compares to BU and GT-SMP programs in terms of preparing for med. school?

thanks and gl to all!

What masters? I searched Stanford's School of Medicine web site and didnt find anything. Do you have a link to the web site?

This is what I gathered, but I haven't confirmed this info:

Stanford University: MS in Biological Sciences
http://www.stanford.edu/dept/biology/programs_msc.html

From: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=116140

Stanford undergraduate requirement: You don't have to be a Stanford undergrad
Length of the program: It takes 9 mo. regardless of where you did your undergrad
Competitiveness of the program: 21/50 were accepted this year (this is old info)
Can you take medical school classes: Med school classes are allowed
Deadline: Mar. 15
Tuition: Expensive ~$30K for 9 months.
Standardized tests: need >3.0 and very good GRE scores

Stanford has a M.S. in Biological Sciences that they claim is just 3 quarters.

I saw that website, but it doesnt say anywhere that you can take any med school courses, nor does it list any of said courses. Unless you have some written information regarding what med school classes you can take (and not Biostats or Medical Ethics), I would be wary.

Yeah I know what you mean. Like I said, I haven't confirmed that info and I don't have the specifics. I might inquire later and get the details. It would be nice to know the specifics and which classes you can take. At this point, I'm not planning on applying to the program. And even though it is Stanford, I think there are more effective programs for professional school hopefuls at comparable (or better) prices.

However, there are some masters programs that do allow you to take medical school courses even if the websites don't explicitly state that information. I'm pretty sure you can take Medical Neuroscience at Wright State University's MS in Anatomy program (which sounds pretty insane for a two year program). Also, I received written information that stated that you're allowed to take Gross Anatomy with the University of Miami medical students at Florida Atlantic University's MS in Biomedical Science program. I'm not planning on applying to these either. 😀

Edit: Aiya--I think the Georgetown and Boston U programs are some of the best if you're trying to prove you can handle medical school. These are some of the few programs that allow you to take the majority of MS-1 medical school courses and require you to do so in one year (there's a few others). I would do either of these over Stanford given the choice.

so to give an update, I went ahead and took the GRE's and applied to the Stanford Masters program and got accepted.

Now I'm trying to decide between staying in Cali and going to Stanford ( which is close to home) or moving out to DC to do the Georgetown SMP program.

Cost-wise, they should be similar, as I won't pay living expenses if I stay in california.

I was wondering if anyone knows whether Med school adcoms care if you took med school immuno or grad school immuno.

Do medical schools really know/care if you took medical courses or if you took them with medical students?

Don't they just look at the name of the institution, the level of science in your coursework, and your GPA performance?

Any advice would be appreciated!!!!
thanks!

What about something less expensive but just as effective, say maybe SFSU? Just a thought since you're in that area anyways.

Thats for their co terminal masters only. It is a comined bs/ms program. They have an MS only program that is for anyone.
