Do classes start August 25th? I can't seem to find this information on their web site...

Yes, I believe so... all the orientation stuff for it starts like August 19th I believe.

from the top of my head after recently receiving a letter from the anatomy & neuro dept:

19th: grad school general orientation
22nd: mcv orientation (could be off by a day or two)
25th: classes start (i am certain on this one)

what program are the two of you in?

Do you guys know how long it took you to receive notification from VCU after you applied to the program?

about a month

and to answer your other post about "the most difficult" and "the easiest" programs to get into at vcu: simply look at the webpage for each dept/program--some differ in their minimum reqs (eg gpa, mcat)

They all seem to have the same requirements except for the anatomy program. Is there something within the fine lines of the admissions criteria that I am missing?

I don't think you are missing anything. If u want to apply to more than one program, you can... and it doesn't cost any extra money (they refunded me for my second application!). I have heard that the physiology program is the easiest program (but don't take my word for that, it's just what some people told me) and that the microbiology program is hard. HOWEVER, everyone has said that regardless of the department, the program is hard as all heck.

I'll be a microbiology/immunology student in the fall...I'm thinking about getting my masters since I'm not applying to med school for Fall 06 entrance.

same as ayznshorti wrote

anatomy program has a little different minimum reqs; i know little about which program is hardest, and i don't know how to take the minimum reqs into consideration to answer this question

ayznshorti: i think the masters is a great idea--part of the reason i applied to vcu was to stay on for the masters, knowing i wont apply for fall'06 matric

looks like i'll see you all down in richmond

Wwwooooooo!! Looking Like I Will Be Seeing All Of You Guys In A Month

crap, I just realized I have to send in my immunization forms! Anyone recieve any word on final tuition for out of staters?

ive been putting off those immuno forms--thankfully im still on my undergrad campus and i have my records

as for tuition: i dont know a specific number, but there is a bill for me on the student accounting webpage--youve probably already seen yours?

take care

Does anybody know where you're going to live yet? This seems to be the hardest part

There's a lot of apartments around Richmond... It's mainly about figuring out how much you're willing to pay in terms of rent and transportation and whatnot (gas is a killer.. $2.25 a gallon for REGULAR... I know it's better than a lot of other places.. but still). I'm living down the hill from the medical campus in Shockoe Bottom. Try www.ForRent.com for some help finding a place.

as a note, when I drove from baltimore to south florida in late spring, for some reason Richmond had some of the cheaper gas prices I had seen.

my sister, a senior at my undergrad inst, gets to keep the car we've shared for four years, so i will be wheel-less in richmond

the housing office has a great link to an apartment search, which seems to be updated every day (it also serves as a forum for seekers and posters)

my biggest concern was distance to classes; im not one to adhere strictly to a bus schedule, and many of the apts seemed farther than i wouldve liked

i applied for graduate housing on the mcv campus, and ended up with warner (all grad students, some mcv students). it's literally across the street from class, as well as the mcv gym

works out to be cheaper than if i had bought an apartment

when are you all moving up , and where are you all living?

I moved down to the Bottom back in May... taking the Princeton Review here for the August MCAT (oh so fun).

you guys think we'll need a car for the fall and where the heck is the gym at mcv as well as the clubs/bars? Parking is far worse than I thought, its like parking in New York city but worse

Crunck Juice,

Here is some info.

Gyms : There are 3 gyms that students can use. One is at the med school . Ive never been there, and I dont know where exactly it is, I know it has a pool , and some weight machines. There are two gyms at the undergrad campus. The first has everything youd probably need. The second is just machines and basketball/raquetball courts (its on franklin I think)

Bars: Two bar areas. One is about 3 blocks east of the med school, just down the hill from our classes. Its down in shockhoe bottom. There are a collection of bars/clubs. Tiki Bobs has $0.10 tacos and $0.25 miller on tuesday. Its a dangerous combination. Down by the undergrad campus, there are some bars in the fan. These are smaller, and cater to students in the fan mostly.

Parking: Parking at MCV is getting more rediculous I hear. Try to take the bus downtown to MCV. MCV/VCU has a "campus connector" bus thats free. It stops on franklin st (around the 100 block, right outside my apt), at VCU , and at MVC . Id probably park at the undergrad garage, walk to the stop (2 blocks) and take the shuttle/bus , otherwise its going to be like $6+ a day I think. Parking is sketch in some places too.

Ill be driving up tomorrow from Florida, so I wont have email access for a day or two , but Ill try to respond after that. Look forward to seeing you all in a couple of days.

Just to echo the previous user, parking at downtown and in the fan is horrendous. Not only is it hard to find decent street parking, but some people I know that went to Vcu undergrad had their cars burglarized 4-5 times within a span of 3 years. I suggest off street / deck parking (My apt. building has spots for $25/month, I think).

Don't know much about the gyms here ... I go elsewhere, but I heard they're pretty shabby. Could be mistaken though ....

I personally don't think I'd be able to make it down here without my car... but in terms of a club scene and driving, it all depends on where u end up living. there are some clubs in the fan area, as well as in Shockoe Slip/Bottom. I don't plan on driving to class though, I'll either walk or take the bus... parking is entirely too expensive for a lot that's not all that close to the building.

Has anyone recieved any financial info from the school (ie a bill)? I havent heard anything from financial/billing office, or anyone else for that matter.

mprover: i had a bill online in the student accounting page (although it was kinda strange the way it was itemized, it's still a bill). i've told you about this in previous posts

crunk juice: the email thing is unnecesssarily complicated in my opinion; theyve switched to some silly web-based system run by lotus. im a die-hard mac fan, and i'll tell you that there is very little support for the mac and i had a hell of a time getting my email to work. i might try to get them to forward the mail from my vcu account to my other account. vcu doesnt seem to be very well-wired

Hey CUartz,

I checked the online system when you origionally posted and I got a "billing info not availible at this time" message (or something to that extent). I wanted to know if anyone specifically had recieved any paperwork or anything like that concerning the bill.

*edit*
I spoke to someone regarding the bill. Since Im not registered, I dont have a bill. I dont actually register befor classes till orientation, so thats when Ill get hit with that. Just an FYI for anyone else confused or waiting.

sorry I posted that

it's not your fault that they have no mercy... and I like how they didn't send this junk to us in the mail. <sorry, MCAT's stressing me out>

Do not quote me on this, but I believe on monday (MCV orientation) we will have our individual department orientations after lunch. Ill try to confirm this for everyone by tomorrow afternoon.

Does anyone else not think it's crazy that no one bothered to tell us this stuff by now? I emailed Dr. Ford. He says the Physiology orientation is immediately following the School orientation on Monday in Room 3-025 Sanger Hall.

where's richmond? 😀
