Anyone with some good advice for me before I start internship and things to do during internship that will prepare me for my general surgery residency?

Thanks

I always tell fourth years getting ready for internship - just go out and party, and relax. DON'T try reading Sabiston's, or studying all your notes, or anything silly like that. Go travel, reconnect with friends/family, take advantage of the vacation that is fourth year of med school. There'll be plenty of time to hit the books later, believe me.

Yeah, I agree with Blade. Nothing can prepare you for residency... you just have to jump in ready to work hard. The rest will take care of itself. Enjoy yourself now while you can!

Sure, take things easy but you may want to go over a few basic skills like EKG's or critical care issues while you have time. The ACS published a list of basic skills that an intern should be comfortable with before starting. It might be worth your while going over it and working on any areas that you fall short on. Here's the link.

So true.

I would just have the necessary "peripheral brain" materials for common things for call nights if you already have them made - otherwise, the Washington Manual for Surgery, the Pocket Guide, On Call, Mont Reid, or some similar handbook will be sufficient. PLEASE don't try studying all this stuff before internship - I guarantee you won't retain much by the time graduation and moving to a new city rolls around. And you won't regret taking some time to travel, see family/friends, etc.
