State Residence Question

I am a California resident and would like to attend a UC medical school, however many of the post bac programs are out of state for me (mostly on the east coast). If I leave California for a year for school, do I lose my California residency and am I forced to apply to the UCs as an out of state resident? I know that out of staters have a much much harder time getting in, so that worries me

If you maintain a CA driver's license, permanent address, voting registration card, etc, you will still be a CA resident. You're not "moving" to the east coast, you're living there while attending school. So when you finish, you'll still be able to attend a CA school as an in-state student. I know this because grew up in MD, but I attended college in LA. I maintained all of what I just said and was considered in state for UofMd.

I am a CA resident, but have been out of state for undergrad for 3.5 years; I never changed my residency. As already said above, don't change your resident status. CA residency is worth gold if you're applying to med school there! If you went to a UC, you probably have parents or relatives in state, and just use their address as your permanent address. Everything will remain the same, except that you'll have to vote absentee (since you'll be out of state), and your tax documents will be mailed to your permanent address.
