They say an M.D is and M.D no matter where you get it...

Which is partially true.

There's the huge financial incentive, on average Out-of-state and Private tuition is about 40,000 while in-state, for say in U-Maryland, it's less than 20,000.

But state schools always have that stigma of being.. well.. a 'state school'. Personally I don't think that applies to maryland once I saw it, it's amaizng.

Anyone know anything about Maryland's reputation specifically? and the whole In-state vs. out or private issue in general?

A surgeon in a very competitive fellowship told me that no one cares where you went to medical school, its really about your residency and your fellowships. I just came from an interview at UMD and the place truly is amazing. If you want new facilities, they have it. I think the Dean of Admissions said that they are ranked like in the top five for the amount of research money they are bringing in (its above $300 million). Also, they have a patient simulation lab where you can practice different procedures on patients without messing up on a real one; also the only trauma hospital in the U.S. is where the UMD students rotate at; and I could go on and on. I don't care, and no one except lowly premeds care what medical school you go to. If you do well at any medical school you will be in the residency that you want. The state school stigma is only coming from premeds. Maryland is viewed very highly (maybe not by U.S. News) but definetly among other medical schools.

If you can be happy at the In-state....TOTALLY do it!!! It will be well worth it when your loans are paid off before EVERYONE elses!! I got accepted to in-state, OOS, and private universities. I took the private university that gives a financial break to in-state students-but it's still $40K instead of $50K for OOS students. The reason why I didn't go in-state was because the in-state universities I was accepted to, I knew that it wasn't what I wanted in a medical school. The clinical experience I will get at the school I'm currently at, I wouldn't have been able to get at any school I was accepted to, let alone any school in the country (IMO). Anyways, back to my point...if the state school you are accepted to has a good program and everything you want in a medical program...by all means...go there!!

I would go with the cheaper school.
