I'm a 2nd year med student and am recently starting to take a look at the competitiveness of residency programs. Do residency programs publish the statistics of those who successful matched into their programs? For example, average step 1 scores, % of applicants picking their program as first choice, average starting salary as an intern etc. I'm looking for something that is similar to the MSAR for med school admissions, if that exists.

How do people in general rank residency programs? For example, let's say I want to do IM in California, but don't care about which part of California. How do I find out how many IM residency programs there are in California and which IM residency program in California is best, 2nd best, 3rd best, etc?

Thanks!

1. Some residency programs will provide interview candidates with short biosketches of their residents along with the materials you receive on interview day. However, I have only seen this happen at smaller programs. can't imagine how this would work at a large IM program. At the very least, many IM program Web sites have a list of their residents including where they went to college and medical school.

Intern salaries are available. Just write to the program administrator and request a copy of the intern contract.

The other data are not available.

2. To identify residency programs in California, use the AMA FRIEDA Web site. Don't know the URL offhand but a Google search should find it for you.

There is very little meaning and utility in the adjective "best". (That is probably the reason there is no such "ranking" of IM programs.) What is important for your residency decision is to match to the program that best fits you.

Hope this helps.
