Basically if I chose to do biochemistry I only have enough science classes to last a year, and a full year of complete just bs classes, so I am wondering if getting a stats major is worth it?

Will it open up any doors after undergrad if I don't get into Medical school? And any of you doing Stats how hard is it?

Stats sucks and is boring as hell. Unless you feel like taking actuarial exams (each one is like an MCAT in terms of studying) or getting a masters degree, avoid it.

I am a statistics major and I absolutely love it (switched from microbio and due to technicalities), but I also love the material.

I would say statistics is probably the most versatile degree out there if you don't do med. You can apply to PhD programs, or even get in to non stats PhD programs if you have research experience. There's also the road of actuarial work, which is really interesting stuff. Every big manufacturing company needs statisticians to tell them if they are being efficient and how well everything is working. Statistics knowledge is a precious commodity in my opinion.

Also, as far as getting in to medical school, I think my stat major contributed to me garnering a couple of top 20 acceptances. It's a great way to show people you can think scientifically, even without strong research background (I had no research when applying). Not to mention, and this is just what I've heard from med students, that PIs will line up to have you work with them if you can run their data for them or give insight there, since so few MDs seem to have much statistics background.

Go for it bud! If I could tell every pre-med to be a stat major I would!!!

Lucky some of us out there enjoy it 😉

LOL. I am between the two people above me. I don't hate stats, but I would never choose it as my career, either.

I'd go with biochem (with a minor in stats?), but I must admit I'm biased.... I'm enrolled in a MS in biochemistry right now. 😀

In the end, it's your decision. Do what you are most comfortable with.

Loved stats. Did biostats/epi research for three years. People who understand what is going on with the statistics are valuable. 👍 If it interests you, do it.
