Hi all, I'm calling for help from the anesthesia residents.

I'm a FMG.
Step 1 218, step 2 236, cs pass 1st attempt.
4 year translational study experience with a bunch of papers in peer review journals.

I've applied to 90 categorical pgs without hearing anything positive back yet. Fortunately not many rejections either. I'm thinking of calling the pgs. Which ones will you recommend? I mean the ones with better chance for people like me to get in. Thanks in advance for your advice.

I would look at the websites for all the programs, and look at their current residents if they post them and their medical schools. This will let you know if they are friendly to FMGs. In terms of stats, I am unsure how your stats compare to foreign grads who match - Charting Outcomes might be of some help there.

Everything courtnes said. See what programs students from your school (and similar schools, whether Caribbean, Indian, European, etc) matched at in the past several years. You can look directly at program websites, as many list where their residents went to school. And check out the Charting Outcomes to see how you stack up against previously matched non-US grads. 218/236 is below avg for non-US grad, but not "unmatchable" stats. Avg matched independent applicant in 2014 match had 230/239. Matches for Step 1 of 211-220 = 67 matched, 36 unmatched. Matches for Step 2 of 231-240 = 91 matches, 23 unmatched.

Please don't take this the wrong way but your chances of matching ANYWHERE are 40-60%. Hence, you need to do some serious homework on the bottom 10 categorical programs and start making phone calls. You should get going on this ASAP and begin by screening programs which accept IMGS/FMGs with a significant % ( I would say at least 30% but 20% or more will do).

I see. it's definitely something worthy of more investigation.

Hi DrZxZx I've got a lot of helpful hints from the 2014-2015 anes resident application thread. Thanks for the information. I read the NRMP report myself and that's one of the reasons I thought I might still stand a chance in anesthesia. I also has a phd in immunology from a good us program. But I just found my phd only contributes to the time gap instead of any positive value in my application. 🙁

I saw you talked about the top, middle and bottom tier topic in an old thread. How do you define the bottom ones? where I can find the information. I've already got 10 some rejections, most of them are big names. So, no worry about the top ones. 🙁
