Hello -

I am planning on taking my step 1 sometime in January next year. It will be in the middle of my Family Medicine rotation. By then i would be done with IM rotation and surgery.

I am a DO student so I only took COMLEX after my second year. I have finished all UWORLD step 1 once/Pathoma/FA. But my practice scores werent in the range I want it to be so I didnt take it.

I plan to allocate a portion of my time to study for step 1 daily (in addition to studying for 3rd year material) from now on until December.I will take a practice exam for a new baseline in December and if its significantly higher than my last NBME (205) then I will use my 2 weeks break time to study for my step 1 in hope that shelf preparation and extra step 1 studying would help.

For anyone who did take step 1 in the middle of 3rd year or during 3rd year - how do you prepare for it? What is your strategy?

Thanks!

I was on the same position last year and have the same plan as yours but found it impossible to do without dedicated time. I took a month off dedicated and score in 230s PM me if you have more questions

It reall does depend on the score range you are looking to hit. Also, it's very much the luck of the draw on the physician you get (how much time they expect from you, how close you are to the clinic, etc). I took my step on Oct 30 during my OB rotation, but it was a slower time for my doctors clinic, so I could study 4 or so hours a night of material and around 80 questions a day. I got my goal, but I felt like IM really helped since we take shelf exams. It is definitely doable with a FM rotation, but just make sure you have a study schedule you can stick to.
