Step 1 matters for how long?

So not sure where the best is to post this or if anyone cruising this forum would know the answer to this... but anyways:

How long in our journey will the Step 1 score still carry heavy weight?
ie: does it matter not only for getting the residency but for when applying to fellowships?
eg: if I'm interested in a subspecialty of gen surg or ortho will a high Step 1 score help me get there even though that's several years down the road?

I very much doubt that fellowship programs will car about your step I score(but i could be wrong), just like residency programs won't care about your MCAT score. HOWEVER, a better Step I score will get you into a stronger program, and the fact that you are in a stronger program will up your chances at getting the fellowship you want.

To my knowledge, fellowship programs like GI ad cardiology do care (the more competitive ones).
