step 1 of 89 good for GS or Ob/Gyn?

I know the first post will be WE DO NOT ANSWER "WAC" QUESTIONS!!
For those who does,, i just wanna know what u think.. 89/216 in step 1 good for general surgery or Ob/Gyn?

I believe the term for this sort of question is "WAMCO" (What Are My Chances Of...). The answer to your question is "No".

Kidding.

Look at your score report. With the three digit score, there is info about where you stand among the people who took the exam around the same time as you. By design, among US students, the Mean is 220 with an SD of 20.

In actuality, the recent results of the Step 1 show that the mean is around 218, with the SD around 14.

Anyway, See where you stand among US students, and decide for yourself.
GS is competitive, so you need to be above average. OB/Gyn is less so.

Are you not going to apply for either if we told you that your score is below the average?

What is the rest of the application like? If the rest of the CV includes where you went to med school and a couple of 10 hr/week volunteer positions then it's probably not that good. If it includes multiple publications and research and good evaluations in the program you're applying to then it's probably fine.

Actually it doesnt have neither!! I will be a fresh graduate right after medical school..

1. Fresh IMG.
2. Step 1: 89 ,, Step 2: hopefully above 90.
3. Average medical school grades, i dont know if it matters at al for FMGs.
4. No researches or publications.
5. Single with No commitments.

Then, to be honest, it isn't that great. It's ok though, probably not going to hurt you too much. But you're probably going to have to have step II in hand before application if not step III also. The competition is more fierce for IMGs, and many many IMGs have very impressive applications, and many have to do a couple of years of research or related experience before they have success in matching.

Im going to have step 2 scores before application and i was also thinking about taking step 3,, but does it improve my chance of matching if i have step 3???

Try to rock Step 2 - a great score will help here. Step 3 may also help.

Grades aren't anywhere near as important as USMLE scores, research, letters of recommendation and USCE for IMGs.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but many programs require IMGs to have taken step III before they will interview you.

I haven't seen that for Surgery. I HAVE heard of programs that require ECFMG certification, which of course entails Steps 1 and 2, but not 3.

Having Step 3 done might be an advantage although since you won't be able to get an unrestricted license for at least 2 if not 3 years of GME, I don't know that its much help other than showing programs that you passed it.
