Hey guys,

I apologize in advance if this question has been asked before... (I did a search and didnt find anything)...

I am a second year med student and have an interest in peds. Im not really sure how competitive it is to get into a peds residency, so I was wondering if anyone knows the average Step I score of people who get into programs such as Columbia, NYU, CHOP. These are highly regarded programs and it would be nice to have a ballpark number to aim for when I take the boards later on this year.

Thanks so much. 🙂

Hi, I don't think there is any such publication. the better the board score, the better the board score. it won't make you any better a physician, and if someone told you that you needed a 225, is that the end? what does that even mean? everyone tries their best, work your butt off the few weeks before, do whatever is best for you (for me kaplan worked well- live lectures and qbank, but i have the luxury of having the lectures near my home institution), and let it go. a better board score will make your life a little easier, but it's peds, so they care about a lot more than that. there are no magic numbers (yes there are cutoffs at some places, but some excellent places have stated during interview day that they don't have a minimum score, some do have a pass on first attempt rule though), and even if there were magic numbers, knowing them wouldn't make you achieve them.

now, when you get your score, and you ask, is this good enough for choice-of-programs? i recommend you find a mentor (or 2) in your home institution for some guidance and apply where you want to go. it's just like applying to med school, you have your dreams, your reaches, your realities and your safeties.

good luck. i was very stressed about step 1, it turned out ok. just focus that energy on qbank😀
(and get a good nights sleep before, maybe a massage the day before, and bring lots of food, water, and gum on test day! and some form of favorite cookie, right ZekeMD?)
