How tough is it to score a 245 as compare to 220. What additional you need to do to get 245.

How many months prior did you guys start studying for your step 1?

Thanks

This will be different for everyone. I personally "studied" (as in dedicated board study time) for 5.5 weeks after 2nd year. I did not even open FA until the first day of dedicated board studying. While I did not do any "board studying" during 2nd year, I did my best to learn the material as well as possible during this time.

How many hours did you study those 5.5 weeks?

Yea, this is pretty dependent on your own knowledge base. If you're going from 220 to 245, it means that you are in need of picking up a decent amount of general information. FA is good for the quick facts, but resources like Goljan RR and UWORLD help you build your database pretty quickly, IMHO...

8-12 and 1-5 on FA Daily. 630-10 on 1 block and review of UW. Did 1 NBME half- way through. One week before my exam did 7 blocks UW for stamina (did this instead of NBME because I realized that I would not get through all of UW otherwise). Didn't take any full days off but finished some evenings early to relax and watch a movie, baseball game, etc.

Are you at 220 in your study period already and want to move to a 245? I got a 193 on my school administered NBME basic science (no studying and we had just started neuro and psych).

Did you take any kind of test prep like kaplan videos...?

I got a 214 before studying on an NBME practice test and a 244 on the real deal. Stick with First Aid and U world and nothing else. Top priority should be to memorize First Aid (or at least try, if you are like me you won't be able to but the effort is still worthwhile). I studied for 5 weeks from 8am-10pm with breaks for meals and exercise.

I think there is a big difference in understanding and attention to detail. For me, I went through FA section by section doing Kaplan questions and adding in flash cards, Goljan etc as needed. When I switched to UWorld and started going through FA again, I really noticed a huge jump in my ability to integrate, retain info and remember subtle details. A second pass made a huge difference especially since much of step 1 is thought-directed questions and not strict recall (although there are a good chunk of gimme questions). Since my school offers lots of study time, I has this luxury but being able to really integrate helped me get above a 245.

4.5 mo of studying, UWorld/FirstAid/Goljan + 6-10hrs/day studying, EVERY day = USMLE 248. Good luck 👍
