I am an MS3 Caribbean medical student who scored a 205 on step 1. I feel that anesthesia is my passion but want to do everything possible to improve my chances of getting a residency. Please, anyone with the knowhow share your tips.
Also, what programs are FMG friendly?
Thanks 😀

Some of my classmates at Saba that just matched into Anesthesia... I'm not sure if you would call these programs FMG friendly, but they were accepted (they all had step 1 scores of 220-242)...

U of Florida, Tufts-NEMC, St. Louis Univ., Brigham and Women's-Harvard

Good Luck.

I don't know about friendly/not-friendly programs; I do know you should consider areas of the country that typically might get less applicants like St. Louis and the midwest. I mention this area because I went to SLU and it got mentioned in the previous spot. Certain areas of the country aren't as attractive either because of the climate (St. Louis--hot and humid; cold/snowy winters with no skiing), or they're not seen as hip or whatever, so you should try to take advantage of this. You're used to the humidity anyway, right?

Additionally, I think the best thing you could do is take step 2 early 4th year and rock it. I know this can be done from personal experience; I took it in late June--I took some easier rotations (EKG reading, etc) that got me out of clinical rotations and I studied HARD for five weeks. Taking it early also helps you focus before you need to worry about applications and personal statements. Try not to stress yourself out either (exercise, sleep, eat well, stay healthy) and really try to focus on getting the most of your studying. I went up 30 points from step 1 to 2.

Good luck. 😳

Have Step 2 scores (both Cs and Ck) back before Sept/Oct. That alone will get you more interviews. It will also give you a chance to improve your scores.

I'm not sure about California, Chicago, or NYC sites as I did not apply to the bigger cities, but here are some hospitals that I saw or heard quite a few IMG's Interviewing:

(Many of these programs are awesome, so don't assume they are not good because IMG's are interviewing)
