Does anyone know the step average at top programs like MIR, JHU, Duke, Penn etc?
What about for programs like Emory and UTSW?
Do scores matter after interview invites?

My guess is 255-260. A 240+ will probably require strong research performance or a PhD with multiple publications.

I could believe the 255-260 figure for UCSF, MGH, JHU, maybe Duke/Penn/MIR. No way that Emory or UTSW have those averages. Even some of the top tier programs in less desirable locations may not have those numbers. 255-260 as an AVERAGE is ridiculous. I could believe somewhere in higher end of the 245-255 range for most top tier programs.

It's called reporting bias. The top scorers are more likely to post their scores. I know a person with STEP 1 220 at a doximity top 10 program.

Yes, but you're also mentioning the two programs who are notorious for preferentially going after applicants with high stats.

This.

There's a more variability than people think. Last year graduates from my school ended up in coastal top 10 programs with 240s. No Phds or amazing research backgrounds.

There's truth to radiology still being very competitive at the top; however, with the fluctuations in applications over the past few years, I see no reason to not spam top programs with your application. The cost is negligible compared to the hotel+flight cost of just one interview.

Word, aim high. There were 66 people with 260+ in 2011 and 58 in 2014, with increase in positions. Only a few programs can theoretically average 260. The top 25 programs combine for more than 300 spots. Medical students who have not yet matched Radiology should not exaggerate how difficult it is to match. Take it from an actual resident.

matchapplicants have MIR residents in the mid 260s. Not sure how reliable this is...
Last year 8/12 residents at Duke scored above 260. (source: https://radiology.duke.edu/wp-conte...diology-Department-Newsletter-Final-Vol-1.pdf)

Um...MIR's matchapplicants page is posted above. Average of interviewed applicants were 254/264. There are plenty of applicants with lower scores. If the people posting their score are averaging 254, I imagine the actual average for MIR interviews is about 250 or maybe even lower

2014 Stats for MATCHED applicants indicate...
- Mean USMLE - 241/249 for US MD and 235/240 for DO/FMG/IMG
- 216 US MD and 46 DO/FMG/IMG had > 250 on Step 1 = 262 total scores > 250
- 58 US MD and 8 DO/FMG/IMG had > 260 on Step 1
- Top 25 doximity programs (not the best ranking but I'll use it) = ~291 spots/year

Seems definitely possible that the top 5-10 programs are getting all 255+ applicants and the top 25 are getting 245+ but there certainly will be 240s people in top 25 programs since some top scores will decide to go to "lesser" programs due to family/geography and the DO/FMG/IMG scores are probably not going to be included in the top 25ish programs since those programs don't really accept those applicants.

On another note, it's really amazing that rads can maintain a > 240 USMLE average with over 1000 residency spots. All other fields with > 240 averages have 300 or less spots (except ortho with around 700).
It's not hard to match to any rads program but still is hard to match at a quality one.

Mostly agree with you but would just like to add the few but not negligible idiopathic rejections of 250+ applicants at top 25 programs. It could be due to research, geographical bias, school reputation, clerkship grades, a red flag, or just random. PD variance is key here.

Also there are a few DOs/IMGs in the top 25 albeit not many. There's 1 at BWH, a few at CCF, a few at Pitt, etc.

When you say it's difficult to match at a "quality" rads program I'd have to disagree with you. There are so many quality rads programs. If you mean "highly regarded" then yes I totally agree
