So as part of our course, our last 12-week semester is dedicated to writing a dissertation, meaning there is very little class time. A few other North American IMGs and I were considering forming a small Step 1 Study Group. The thing is, none of us have really ever been in a study group before, and are not sure exactly what to do. I mean, how much material can you actually cover during a week if you're also working on an intense paper?

The concept I had was just to assign a certain amount of material a week (maybe using FA as a guide), and then get together and go over stuff that confuses people, and also to do a few relevant practice questions. What do you all think? Any other methods that would be more beneficial?

This wouldn't be a replacement for proper hardcore studying, which will be during our summer break, but just a thing to get the ball rolling while we're all still together.

Thanks🙂

That's pretty much what my study group is doing - we're meeting once a week and we divide up the material in advance to teach it to each other. You have a more in depth understanding of the material you taught and although questions are a good idea, we usually never make it there, it takes up too much time!

Overall, I think that group study is good to stay on top of stuff and in sync with others but there's definitely a lot that everyone will need to do on their own.

Good luck!

so during the week, everyone is covering something different, and then try and teach it all to one another? does that work well? (that sounds mean...i'm just curious)

i figured we'd all go over similar material so that we could discuss it at the end of the week

We liked to get together at a comfortable place (ie Starbucks or even a bar) each of us would take a clinical vignette book (i.e Underground clinical vignettes) and take turns reading a case and seeing who could guess the case or teach something interesting to the group about the case. We would go around the group eaching reading a case from the book. This is a nice socialization time to relax and still learn a little
