I've read a few threads on this, but there doesn't seem to be a consensus. I am scheduled to take the exam in early April, and according to a USMLE handout I have, my score will be reported sometime between 6/18 and 7/16. If the score report comes back in July, or by same small chance that I fail it and need to retake it in July (in which case the results may come in as late as Oct), will I be able to start residency?

I know I should ask the particular program I'm interested in, but I am in the process of creating my rank list (deadline is in two days), and if most programs absolutely must have the pass results by late June, then I will be forced to rank the ones that don't have that requirement at the top of my list (based on info on FREIDA). Basically, are programs really strict on this? Regardless, I will have my diploma as my medical school only requires that we take Step 2. Anyone have any firsthand or accurate knowledge about this? I really appreciate any help.

There is no hard and fast rule about this.

States as a whole do not require Step 2 to start residency nor does ACGME.

Sorry but you HAVE to check with your programs and see what is required to start residency. You may be contractually obligated to have passed Step 2 by the start of residency.

Dude,

Don't stress out so much. Rank your programs how you want to rank them. Step 2 scores are not a killer really. Programs understand that there will be the rare failures and will allow you to retake the test while in residency, with the understanding that if you fail again you may be dropped from the program. Many schools and residencies only require that you have taken Step 2 prior to graduation from med school. I took my step 2CS on 3/28 and had my score well before the projected date. I do agree that you should contact the program you match to to ensure they know you are waiting for your score.

I wouldn't worry about it at this juncture unless taking it earlier is truly an option for you. Rank your programs in the order that you would like to go to the programs. Then do your best on Step 2. I took Step2 CK in the 3rd week of March and Step 2 CS in mid April. I didn't have much of a choice given my rotation schedule. Honestly, just give it your best shot and take some comfort in that most people do better on Step 2 than Step 1 (which you've obviously passed!). It will work out in the end.
