Most places will offer interviews without a step 2 score but require it in order to rank you. That said, a strong step 2 score will help your chances of getting an interview so you're probably best off taking it before interview season.
As someone who did below average on Step 1 and improved about 30 points on Step 2, I'm 100% certain this helped me get interviews. I even ended up getting interviews at places where I was under the published "Step 1 cutoff" scores.
I agree with Cinematographer that Step 2 scores probably aren't considered in the invitation process since many people haven't taken it by Oct. 1. However, it is an absolute must if your Step 1 is low. That being said, don't blow off taking Step 2 if your Step 1 is stellar. Several PD's from major programs have gone on record (google ALIEM videos) saying how Step 2 scores are actually more important. Further, an APD during my interview at Denver told me since I had a great Step 2, my Step 1 was irrelevant in his/her eyes.
I would just take it early, get it out of the way, and rake in those interviews.
I've heard that some medicine and ortho programs are requiring it now before an interview offer. Some places in anesthesia have started to ask for step 2 as well although it seems somewhat random. My guess is that it's going to become more important going forward
