Most say that if you have a great step 1, then step 2 can possibly hurt you, hence most take it late who are thinking of applying to ophtho in the first place. I found that the Hawaii TY required step 2 cs and ck for consideration, so I decided to take step 2 after apps for ophtho had gone out. That was the only place on my list (ophtho and prelim/Ty) that had a step 2 requirement. That being said, once you take step 2, if you're happy with it, you can submit it as supplemental material to your ophtho programs, or bring your score report with you to interviews.
