hey everyone,

i was told that there are some specialities/programs that require a step 2 score before comipiling their rank list...does anyone know if anesthesiology programs require step 2 scores before they will make their rank list? if this is true, is it anesthesiology as a whole or just certain programs. any help would be much appreciated. thanks a bunch!

also, how many letters of rec. do we need and do they all need to be from anesthesiology people? Thanks!

There may be some programs that require Step 2, but as far as I know, that is very rare, and I would have no idea which ones that would be. None of the places I interviewed at required it, and a lot of the other people I interviewed with hadn't even taken it yet. I guess it's possible that certain programs may require it before they make their rank list, but they would tell you this at your interview I'm sure.

As for Letters, ERAS only lets you send in 4 to any particular program. I got 5, but one was a medicine faculty, and I sent thhat one only to my prelims that I applied to (and therefore sent one less of my other letters) 3 of my other letters were anesthesiologists (one was a Chairman's letter) and the last one was from a Surgeon who I worked with on the SICU. If you can, I reccomend getting a least one surgeon...I think it looks good if they like you. Either way, I would try and get at least one from someone who is not an anesthesiologist.

Hope that helps.....

thank very much,
your advice is much appreciated

I have not taken step 2 yet (CS or CK). I was not asked about that at any program I interviewed at.
