Hey everybody,

So today a buddy of mine who's also applying for anesthesia drops a bomb on me saying that a number of programs require proof of passage of Step 2 CK and CS in order to be ranked on their ROLs. I guess it's my fault for not calling every program I applied to and asking them their policy...now, I've read the FAQs and done searches on this forum and I haven't seen this issue addressed explicitly (but if I missed it, please, be gentle 🙂 )

So, I guess I'm asking if this is a widespread phenomenon or just true of a minority of programs. I was planning on taking CK and CS next spring but if need be, I can bump it up.

Just want to thank you all..I've been lurking for months but only started posting recently. Glad to be here.

You don't need the clinical skills test to be ranked. The written Step 2 test requirement is institution dependent, but when I was helping people with their apps last year, this was not an issue I encountered.

It may be a good idea to go ahead and bump them up to an earlier date. From what I understand, there have been applicants recruited through the match who later failed the CK or CS, which put the programs in a bind. Therefore, the programs would like the assurance that their new resident has already passed the liscensing requirements.

UC Irvine sent out an email in January 2004 stating that they required Step 2 scores in order to rank you... but then reneged that email a few days later. After quite a few released their scores (including myself), I presume. No other program I applied to (Chicago, California, Seattle) even mentioned Step 2.

Hey No O2,

I asked a similar question a month-or-so ago when our medical school ‘encouraged’ us to take CS prior to interview season. Here was what the consensus was back then.

PS – and as Step 2 cs is concerned.... I'd rather be a prostate model than do that again.

Good Luck!

i'm not sure about anesth but some other specialties may be requiring it. at our school (colorado) we got an e-mail about a month ago from student affairs saying some programs were requiring step 2 cs to rank you. they didn't name specific programs/specialties but definately encouraged everyone to get it done ASAP

Hey, thanks everyone...you guys rule.

I'll probably go ahead and bump things up a bit so it doesn't bite me in the a$$ later.

I was wondering if anyone has any recent information about if Step 2 ck scores are required to be ranked...

I think some programs require it and some don't, but I'm not sure which ones...

I was all ready to take CK in January 2006 after studying while taking a month of vacation to attend interviews, so my score would be back before the programs finalized their rank lists.

Guess what, I did not study one bit while interviewing day after day. I delayed the test until March. Apparently I still got ranked, since I matched. 😎 No program told me they needed the score (and as for the program I matched at, one of their faculty did inform me the score was needed -- but since I matched there, the faculty member was clearly wrong).

When I was a mere applicant - interview season of 2002 - I only came across 2 programs that had Step 2 related requirements. VA Commonwealth Univ required either proof of passing or having scheduled step 2 to even grant an interview AND, unless you could provide proof of passing, would not rank you on their list. The other program was Penn St and they only required that you had to have scheduled - or passed - taking step 2 to rank you.

But, I would expect a lot of this has changed.

I've specifically asked several good programs about this. The answer that I've received is that if your step 1 is good, step 2 doesn't need to be received by them in order for them to confidently rank you.
