i would like to broaden my residency opportunities to allopathic, as well as osteopathic. i did not take the step one because at the time i was preparing for family practice. a year later, i have changed my speciality. so, is it possible for me to take the step 2 without the step 1 and still be eligible for allopathic residencies? or do they want both step 1 and step 2 scores? - OMS III WVSOM

If you search these forums, you will find that this topic has been discussed....However, my guess would be that for most programs, step 1 is more important than step 2 (in terms of interviewing, etc). I am not sure if you can sit for step 2 without having taken step 1, but regardless, if you are planning to apply to specialties which themselves are more competitive, you owe it to your application to take step 1. If in doubt, call programs and ask.

Best,
