Can you choose not to release your step 2 score to residency programs in the event you take it early and do not score well.
 
yes, you can opt to do this. There's an option in the transcript section of ERAS. The trick is, you have to actually apply to all programs and have your USMLE transcript transmitted to them before you actually take Step 2, or at least before your score is made available. Otherwise, they could actually get a copy of your score before you do!

yup, the only catch is that if you indicate on your ERAS application that you will be taking the Step 2 exam on a certain date (i.e., anytime before january), programs may expect to have your step 2 scores by the time the rank list certification deadline rolls around.

hence, do not say that you will take Step 2 on such and such date. Just say that you took Step 1 and passed.
