What happens if you fail Step 2 and dont pass it before you start your internship? Can you lose your residency spot?

Possibly yes. It's not a matter of just losing a residency spot...many states (maybe all, but I'm not sure) will only give out medical licenses contingent on you passing step 1 and step 2. If you don't get a license, you can't start residency.

Check with your school too, some schools won't give you your degree/diploma/ won't let you graduate unless you passed all of step I and II.

I know there were 3 people from my school last year who all matched but had to give up their spots because they technically didn't graduate because of not passing CS. I think they are all trying to scramble into spots this year.
