I'm an MS3 at a US med school, applying to peds residencies this fall. I got a 237 on Step 1 and will be looking at NYC peds residencies (Columbia, Einstein, Mount Sinai, etc.)

Do you think I need to take Step 2CK before I apply? Or can I delay it until December?

Thanks so much for your help!

You have to look at each program individually--their website should say. No matter what, you can apply without Step 2CK. 2 of 19 programs I applied to would not rank me in February if they did not have my score. I would play it safe and take CK no later than October. I think each year, more and more programs are going to want to see that you passed all your boards (Step 1, Step 2 Ck and CS) before they rank you high. Especially since peds is getting increasingly competitive.

Good luck!

237 is very solid for peds residency.

But if you don't get an interview at one of those programs that you really wanted you may be haunted by the what-if?

If your step 1 is the lone shining star in your application, I'd top it off with a strong Step 2 (come on, you can do 250 at least!)...if the rest of your application is the same or even better (you're on SDN, I am sure you got all Honors and stuff) then I think you're fine.
