Step 3 requirements

Upcoming pgy 1 here, I'm planning on taking step 3 as early as possible and trying to register now. I read soshie's post about registering in a state with no post grad requirements such as Conn, Nebraska or California....even if you will attend residency in a different state and have no intentions of taking it in the registered state. Soshie's post was from 2005 and I was wondering if anyone knew of any changes to step 3 policy or does that information still hold true? Thank you for your time.

Still holds true. In fact, its more explicitly stated on the FSMB website:

Do I have to take Step 3 for the medical board of the state where I reside?
No. While many people do this, it is not required.

11. Does it matter where I take the Step 3 exam?
No. While you will sit Step 3 under the eligibility requirements of a specific licensing authority, you can take the exam at any Prometric test center in the United States or its territories.
