i graduated in march and will apply for pediatrics in september and was thinking about getting step 3 out of the way. are there restrictions to this? are some programs/states against this? i'm only asking because someone held off step 3 until they matched. thanks!

are you an IMG?

I'm not sure how it works for FMGs.

For american grads, I know that its preferable to take step 3 ASAP and get it out of the way.

idk how ill find time during residency to take step 3. plus im afraid ill forget internal medicine. when do peds residents typically take step 3?

I think end of first year of residency, same for International Medical Graduates doing residency in the US.

As a FMG you should be able to apply for step 3 after you get your ECFMG certificate AND graduate from medical school - you need your medical diploma in order to apply for step 3.

I think it would be a wise decision to sit for step 3 before starting residency. I'll start residency in July, and I sat for step 3 in the end of January (of course I needed it to apply for a H1B-visa - but I would have done the same if I had a J1-visa instead).

Point is that step 3 is an easy exam, you should have no problem passing it. I used 2 weeks of full time study and I passed without any problems...

Just go for it - good luck!

Edit: You can register in Connecticut, which will allow you to sit for the exam without having started residency. You don't need to take the exam in Connecticut though, you can take it at any Prometric center across the US. That's the way we IMG's sit for it...

Unless they changed the rules since I took Step 3, its going to be hard to take Step 3 before residency.

You cant even register for the test until you have your medical school diploma, which probably wont happen until at least a couple of weeks after graduation. Then you have to wait a week or two just to get your registration permit. For most schools, that means you get a window of 2 weeks to register and take the test (assuming graduation in late May and starting of residency on July 1).

will passing the step 3 before applying for a residency increase the chance to get one?

That's true for an AMG. However, the OP is a FMG who graduated in March and won't even apply for residency until September. So for her/him it wouldn't be a problem at all, as long as he/she has the medical school diploma. There should be plenty of time to get the diploma and apply for step 3 before July 2013.
