Step point down

Anyone have experience regarding stepping down from a PIC Position. Not exactly sure if this is allowed or looked down in certain companies.

I did it twice at CVS. They always managed to rope me back into the gig until I permanently separated from the company. The last time my choices were literally either take a PIC position (and I had to remain PIC for a period not less than 1 year) or be laid off (this was after a 24 hour store was converted to non-24 hour so a somewhat extreme case). Anyway in my case there was no stigma about stepping down and they were always more than happy to catapult me back to PIC whenever they wanted/needed.
