Hey guys, quick question for you all who may have a similar background - I'm an MS3 from St. George's University in Grenada and very interested in obtaining a Neurology residency. I've done 2 years of stroke recovery research and got published on a couple of papers, which I hear is a major plus for Neuro since it's such an academic and evolving field. I'm shooting to obtain a position at a very good program. Now I'm not sure what Neuro programs are looking for in terms of step scores, but I've read avg's are around 218 for step 1 scores for most Neuro programs. What would this profile look like for a program such as Cornell or Columbia?? Are programs such as these looking for 99's acrosss the board for the step 1 and 2? I have a very competetive step 1 score, but I'm not sure how far that and my research could take me, since I will be a graduate of SGU, as opposed to an American school. SGU is a great school, but it's a fact that we may not be given the first look if a similar candidate is from an American school. Have any of you ever heard of an IMG being accepted into a top program such as Columbia? If not, won't be holding me back from applying there, but just curious to see where I may stand since you all are quite experienced at the game. Thanks a lot for your feedback.

Columbia might be a long shot. Cornell might be a possibility, but I wouldn't limit your choices to those two. From what I've heard and seen the profile of a resident @ a top neurology program is very far from your profile. A high step I might be enough to compensate. IMGs are occasionally accepted at top programs, but often they have connections and/or substantial research background, and from a top overseas institution.

If I were you I would still apply though because your application is generally very strong and neuro is easy enough right now that you should get you in somewhere good.
