Hi there,
I'm in a bit of a situation and I'm hoping someone on here can give me the answers I'm looking for. In my Freshman year, I started a Management degree at an online school (due to pressure from my employer). Needless to say, Management was not my forte. I took 6 classes through this school, and only passed one of them. I would be lying if I said this was all because it was an online school, but I believe that was a major part of the problem. My lack of interest/motivation in business also had a big part in my failings. So instead of damaging my undergraduate GPA any further, I transferred to a state university (I live in Alaska). Things have been going fantastic since I made that move. I've done four semesters at this school and my current GPA is ~3.25. I'm not sure what my cGPA is with all the nastiness from my other school.

Anyway my question is, can I recover from this if I continue with an upward trend? Also, since most of the classes I failed were business classes (ie, Accounting, business statistics, etc), should I retake those in the hopes of healing my GPA, or should I leave them be since they were taken at a different school? I need to know what would be best in terms of applying to DO schools in the future, considering they have grade replacement. I still have a couple of years to try to do some damage control on my GPA and need to know the best course of action for success.

Also- I haven’t received a clear answer on whether this has relevancy or not in my hopes of attending a DO school, but before I even attempted that disastrous business degree, I attended a Medical Assisting Certificate program. I graduated with a GPA of 3.95. I know the GPA I received from this certificate doesn’t count toward any GPA I would receive at a University, but would this help out my application any?

Thanks in advance!🙂

1) Med schools look at all coursework taken after high school, whether it be from a community college certificate program, online college, or four year university. The plus is that your certificate grades will contribute to your cumulative AACOMAS GPA. The downside is that your online grades will not go away.

2) I would take advantage of grade replacement and retake the courses in which you achieved worse than a B (3.0). Otherwise, despite a consistent upward grade trend, five failed courses will weigh quite heavily on your final GPA.

You look like you've got your act together though, keep up the good work.

Thanks for the information. If only I could go back in time and NEVER enroll in that business program!

I did not know that my certificate program GPA would be calculated into my overall AACOMAS score. Does it matter where I received the certificate? I went to an accredited school, but it wasn't a university.

doesn't matter. every class you have ever taken from any college or university.

i took a "continuing education" class for Ford Master Technician Certification that I had to list.

i had more than 5 failed course and mine were 13+ years ago in radio-television. i went back to school to pursue my bachelors and had a solid upward trend.
even with that i needed a smp masters program to finally get into med school.
so can it be done?? absolutely
but be prepared for an uphill battle and to explain your downfalls with the business failures, you will be asked about them.

but as i have said before, it only takes one. it only takes one person to look at your application and see past those failing grades and see the potential of the doctor you can be.

good luck :luck:

That's fantastic! I'm very glad to hear that my dream is still possible, even if it does mean that hard work is in order. This forum has given me so much inspiration to keep moving forward with my dream. Thanks everyone!
