To all of those who are applying next year here is a little scenerio for you:

I submitted my AADSAS application on June 24. My DAT scores are Academic 21 and PAT 18. My GPA is a 3.2 and my science GPA is a 3.38........it is the middle of freakin January and I have not been accepted to a single dental school!!!!!

If your thinking that the reason is probably because I didin't demonstrate extracurricular activities, community service, or shadowing, think again.

It boils down to this: I APPLIED TO THE WRONG SCHOOLS and TO TOO FEW! I only applied to 6, 4 of them were in-state schools. What the hell was I thinking?

Everyone: Make sure you apply to enough schools....and the right ones!!! I'm just starting this thread to maybe persuade anyone not to make the same mistake I did. According to my current state-of-mind I think I might have to reapply next year.....and you can be assured that I won't make the same mistake twice!!!

Good luck to all and congatulations to everyone that has already been accepted!!!!!

With all due respect, and so you dont lose a year, have you thought of applying to NYU? I know there deadline is in March, maybe the first. With stats like those, you should at least get the interview if not accepted.

Teething,

Hang in there, buddy! Don't lose hope, sometimes it just takes time. Like you said you applied to some schools that are known not to accept a ton of out of staters. However, you still have a couple of months before the fat lady sings.

Like PashaJ said, you can or might want to apply to some schools for the sake of getting in this year. But don't lose hope, I emailed ya and PM'ed ya.

Pasha is right.... i would apply to most of private schools with deadlines in March.... i'm sure y'll get in somewhere by May!

all you need to do is to have AADSAS send your application to them... it shouldnt take them more than 3 weeks sinc they have already processed it once...

good luck to you

Everyone,

Thanks for the support and advice. I should mention that I have two beautiful children. I don't think I can apply to just anywhere...example NYU. Raising a family in New York...I don't know if the wife would go for that.

I am really interested in Nova...should have applied there. Does anyone have an idea if it would be worthwhile to even try and get in there this year? What private schools would I have a shot at?

Thanks again.

Off the top of head some private Schools:
USC, Howard, Nova, BU and NYU, all with deadlines in March.

NY's is a great place to raise kids because of its culturely diverse population. But, according to a study released today, NYC is the most expensive place to live in the US. Bummer.

Teething, I hate to be the pessimist here, but your stats are really pretty average. The bar for admissions is getting higher every year. At MCG (the only school I've really been paying attention to for the last year or so) the last class had an incoming average GPA of 3.48 and that with only accepting in-state applicants and incredible affirmative-action pressures from the political culture here in Gerorgia. I don't really know how it is at other schools, but I assume the same is happening there.

Anyhow, good luck and I'm sure you'll get in somewhere. I just wanted to let other hopefuls out there know that those kind of stats are no longer a guarantee of admission. P.S. Props for doing all that with kids. I know how much time that takes out of your life. 🙂

yosemitesam,

Yeah, the one thing I've realized more than anything throughout this whole process is just how average I am....probably the reason I'm not in yet.

thanks,

your average joe

Teething, I am not ripping you in anyway. What you've done is quite an achievement so don't get depressed or anything. I mean, truly average people don't really even think about applying to dental school. What I meant is that these are around average stats for applicants. I'm sure you'll get into dental school. Dentistry is a competitive field and you have to be the cream of the crop to even consider it - you've met that criteria; we're just up against all the other cream of the crop. Just because an athlete is a second-round draft pick doesn't mean he isn't more able in his chosen field than 99% of the people on earth. Your stats are in NO way a reflection of mediocrity! So hang in there, and good luck!! 🙂

teething,
your stat is good for nova. I remember last year Yah-E applied late, took his DAT late, and still got accepted to Nova. Don't get discouraged. Having a 21 average is not easy. I know many people would kill to have your scores. Keep your hope up and best of luck with you.

Teething-

Your stats will get you into dental school. I'm just baffled why you haven't heard anything from schools. I sent my application on July 3rd. My stats are around yours (see STAT's thread), and I would have to say that my application has been very well received. What 6 schools did you apply to and when were your interviews? If you are really curious, you can always call the schools and ask. Anyhow, I wish you the best of luck. Keep your hopes up! PM me if you want.

Hey teething,

Remember that averages are averages. That does not mean that everyone had at least the average or better. Some lower and some higher. Your stats look to be average or better for a lot of the schools out there. Aside from the numbers your personal level of maturity and responsibility speak volumes about what you can contribute to the field of Dentistry. Remember that a lot of dental school applicants have not yet started families and that gives you a bit of an edge.

If you had interviews at any of the schools that you applied to you still have a very good chance of getting in. Remember that a lot of the schools are still interviewing people so they probably still have room. After all you didn't mention that you had received any rejection letters. I know that while looking at the posts on this site it can be very disconcerting to see all of the acceptances that pop up here without any coming your way. I am in the same boat as you but you have to think positively about your future. My stats are not as good as yours and I was granted interviews to UOP, USC and the University of Washington (my top three choices out of five I applied to). Until I receive rejection letters I am not even thinking about not getting in.

Don't let rumors or hearsay get you down. Nobody really knows what is going on behind the doors of the admissions office.

Good luck,
CA

Keep trying! My Science GPA is 2.95 and Overall is 3.2 or so. DAT was 21/20 (I got 22's 21's and 20 in every section). Got accepted at 4 schools, waitlisted at 4, and rejected at 2. Still havn't heard from 3. I applied the exact time you did. I really think you'll get in. Next year you will for sure, but hopefully you won't have to wait until next year. Just remember to apply to the private schools and stay away from the state ones. For example I got denied at Kentucky (17/17 Dat avg.) but got into UOP (21/20 avg.). Doesn't make sense to me, but whatever. Best of luck.
