Hey everyone, do you think it might be too late to apply to Columbia? The deadline is Nov. 3rd, and even though they're non-rolling, they still say that even highly ranked applicants will probably be wait-listed late in the season. My stats are slightly above Columbia's averages, so I think a few months ago, I might've had a shot.

Am I pretty much screwed now? If I've got no chance, then I'd rather save that hefty $85 application fee.

6 months from now, will $85 be worth more than a shot at Columbia to you?

😛 Well of course not! I'm just curious to know how heavily the odds are stacked against my favor. 6 months from now, if I'm just sitting on the wait-list or rejected, I'd say the utility of $85 will be astronomically higher.

Thanks, indianboy, for crushing my futile hopes. I appreciate it.

didn't know about the whole "they'll waitlist you if you apply really late" thing. imo, if you really wanna go, i'd just apply and see what happens. since they're non-rolling and interview a ton of people, you probably have as good of a chance as anyone else. good luck!

If you get invited to Columbia for interview....I promise you that you will be glad you applied! It's an amazing school and my interviewer walked me to the elevetor. These people are simply amazing.

Thanks for the insight everyone. I'm in the midst of filling out the app and should have it sent out by the end of the week. I think I innately knew I wanted to do it, but needed a good tongue-lashing to get off my lazy bum and get started.

Now where did I get October 15 as cut off date for Columbia? I was thinking of applying too....maybe I still can?

For those who applied to Columbia, how long did it take for them to get back to you about complete application notices?

I thought I was complete at Columbia early in Oct, and I still haven't heard from them. I keep e-mailing people at the Admissions office, and nobody responds.

they were pretty fast about it. if i remember correctly, i think within a week after submitting everything in.

I had everything submitted in early July, but didn't get the application complete notice until late august. However, I did get my interview invite two weeks after getting notification that my app was complete.

Columbia interviews half their out-of-state applicants, according to the MSAR. So if you do apply, it seems like you would have a great chance of getting an interview.

Whoa! Your interviewer walked you to the "elevetor"?!? Must be a pretty amazing place then . . . . .

That alone has got to be worth $85.

yea...they're pretty nice. a person on the admissions committee saw me in my suit, looking lost at the columbia subway stop. she literally walked me over to the school and got me a drink. way nice. don't know if i'd fit in there with all those hahvahd peeps though, but it's a nice place.

Columbia is a private university. State residency has nothing to do with who gets interviewed. If Columbia has a large number of NY residents applying and interviewed, it's only because NY has a large pre-med population. I'm sure that if you looked at the number of california applicants and number interviewed, they'd be similar.

I just checked my Columbia application site, and it says that the MD deadline has been extended even further form Nov 3 to Nov 15th. I thought this might be useful to some people.

no but for real, i did think the people at columbia were really nice. not as nice perhaps as some other interviews i've had down south, but friendly nevertheless for ny'ers 😛

shoudl i apply to columbia now with a mcat 25, gpa 3.9, and great everything else? or too late to get an interview now?

I must have caught them on a bad day! about 4 of us interviewees had ours intervews changed twice during the day......needless to say they we were pretty confused....anyway, aside from the grumpy staff, the day was really good; students that came into the lounge were very nice.

You never know man, go for it! Even though it's this late, I still bit the bullet and submitted. I'd hate to think about the "what if..." factor if I hadn't.

think they'll even consider the rest of my application, my 25 is murder. soo much work and accomplishments will be looked over, i know it. What do you think?

I have a good MCAT score, I am applying to Columbia and they have not contacted me for an interview yet. If in doubt, apply.

You should be aware though that Columbia has one of the higher MCAT averages of any med school right behind Washington U (I think 35 or somewhere around there.) Just a fact. If you have the money though, go for it. The worst that could happen is a rejection while there is always the chance you'll get in.

darn. i thought the deadline was oct. 15 too. guess i know what i'll be doing this weekend.
