As a community college what was the rational for strictly a pre-Pharm vs. a pre-Health Professional? Does your school already have Pre-Doc, Pre-Vet, etc?

How has funding worked out? Did you talk to any other teachers about sponsoring (possibly a chem teacher)? Does your school have one counselor that primarily deals with health kids or are they all fairly knowledgable?

After talking with my classmates during the course of a semester, I realized that a significant number of them were Pre-Pharmacy. I hadn’t expected this or run into many others at the universities or community colleges I had previously attended. We all had a lot of questions and pieces of knowledge, but no formal setting to share with or learn from each other. We had no one to turn to at our school but each other. Our college doesn’t have anything set up for Pre-Pharmacy students, although the school does have successful Biotechnology and Chem. Tech programs, and a thriving Outdoor Club. I researched how to start a club, wrote a constitution, began recruiting the Pre-Pharmacy students I knew, secured a faculty sponsor, and hung up flyers. Word spread quickly and there was a lot more interest than I had anticipated. At our school a club has to jump through some hoops to get access to the funding, and they had already divvied up the money to the established clubs for the year by the time we were ready. Most of the chemistry professors at my particular campus are a part of the robust Biotech and Chemtech programs, which are highly funded by local businesses and universities. I had a good relationship with my Anatomy & Physiology professor and knew that he was perfect for our club. Since then, faculty and staff from the physics dept, microbiology, and even an organic chem. tutor have helped. Our club has definitely created a buzz in the department and is an idea whose time has come. For the future, we are looking to secure funding, expand our club to other campuses; and establish connections with local Pharmacy Colleges, employers, Kaplan, and Harcourt (for the PCAT) amongst other things.

Your club looks great Dry Water! I also go to a community college and we don't have a pre-pharmacy or pre-health club; I'm thinking about starting one this quarter. How did you handle setting up a meeting time that was convenient for as many people as possible? Its great that my college offers so many different class times, but it's going to make it a pain to set a meeting time convenient for a lot of people especially since most students work, have family obligations, etc. too.
 
Thanks for the compliments guys, but during the first meeting I tried to stress that it wasn’t my club, but their club. There are a lot of great people involved, and it has a chance, long after I’m gone, to be much better than I ever could have imagined.

Toulene, finding a meeting time that would accommodate as many members as possible has been a challenge. Initially, I asked a few of the members for suggestions, and our faculty advisor recommended some slots where there weren’t any important classes (like chemistry labs) running. In the end, we picked a day and time, held our breath, and hoped people would show up. When they did, we asked them what days and times would work best for them. Right now, we are considering holding one meeting a month at a different time, in the hope that those who cannot make the normal meetings might attend. In the beginning, I knew the students were going to be busy, so I intended to make the club as distance friendly as possible. I wanted to include as many Pre-Pharmacy students as I could, so I set up the website and try to send out a lot of emails to keep people informed. Hope this helps!

The club is designed primary as a support structure for Pre-Pharmacy students at our college. We surveyed our members to see what they were interested in or needed, and we talk about those things during our meetings. For instance, a lot of our members wanted info about the PCAT, so we dedicated a meeting to that topic. We handed out lots of information about the PCAT, answered questions, and then worked through a short sample test under real time constraints. We encourage everyone to show up and share any pharmacy related info or questions. Also, we are currently setting up agreements with the local pharmacy college to accept our members into its programs, and with local hospital and retail pharmacies to hire our members as pharmacy techs. Our members have expressed an interest in formal study groups too. Secondly, our club wants to branch out into the community and volunteer is services to local charities and events such as the Special Olympics and MS Walk. Our constitution is available on the website along with minutes from our meetings.

Thanks, it is a lot of work, but it can be surprisingly rewarding. Oh, and I'm hoping to be P1 this fall.
