hey guyz,
I was wondering if those going to stony brook could help me out by letting me know about housing options..what is everyone doing? I live about 1 hr away from the school and not sure if I want to stay at home (commuting time may lead to tiredness and I think i'd be a bum at home😉 . Anyway, is there on-campus housing? is anyone planning on renting a place near the school? Greatly appreciate the help🙂

Patricia told me that they are going to send us some housing information soon. I live 1 hour away from Stony Brook also and I am planning to rent a place near the school.

Haha, I live about an hour away too... Definitely don't want to live at home--the drive would be way too exhausting plus living with my parents just doesn't sound like fun. Anyway, they have 3 graduate apartment buildings on campus (we might get to choose from only two, though). The apts go for about 600/mnth the lowest. I would wait to see what the info has to say, but you can get some more info about this on SB's main web site if you're anxious about this now:

I'm thinking I may live on campus my first year, and then share a house with some people I get along with my second year... But if anybody finds a good deal (w/utilities) and wants to share, I wouldn't be against checkin that out either 😉

great, thanks for the info! yeah i dunno yet if I'll be staying on campus or get a place near by..we'll see what the info we get says... but if anyone finds a good deal lemme know too 😉

lol I live 1 hour away as well and I wanted to rent an apartment because I refuse to live on campus👎. If someone is interested in sharing an apartment or something or finds a good deal, pm me.

when I was on my interview one of the students told me to just like like 5-10 mins off campus... the drive is a good way to just relax and forget about everything on the way home.... they said that the on campus was like living a college dorm... like micro sized singles.... I know if I had one of those I would have to live in the lib to study because nothing would get done in that jail cell.

Search craigslist, and also search the off campus housing page. Check the main undergrad SB website and there should be a link somewhere. You can narrow your search there - landlords post available housing on that site.

Get a few places to check out and arrange with the landlords to come in on one day (if you're lucky they'll all agree on the same day - if not you'll just have to drive out more than once). You could most likely find something near 600/mo + utils near the school. Once you get out to Port Jefferson it could shoot up to near 800/mo or more depending on how nice a place it is. I originally found a place for 525/mo + utils so places under 600/mo do exist. It wasn't the greatest place but it worked. I eventually had to leave (long story, not explaining) but I found another really nice place for 700/mo. Worth it.

I never recommend living on campus. If you are that lazy, go for it. I would search around first though.

Also you might want to consider searching for a month to month so that if you decide in October that you want to live with some of your friends, you could get out of your place.

Why?

And my reasons for probably living on campus first is not laziness... I probably won't have a car and I don't really want to come home to an empty apartment my first couple of months. I could put up want ads for a apt. mate, but I don't want it to be someone completely random. At least I would be housed with other grad students through on-campus housing. Meet more people that way too (hopefully). Don't know how I'd feel about having male apt. mates (I think everyone who posted so far is a guy).. etc.....

So if on campus housing really sucks that much, I hope more girls start posting 😛

Because you're not an undergrad anymore. It's time to get out there and learn something about leasing a place and living on your own (for real, not within a university).

Also I think the on campus housing options can actually be more pricey.

Thanks, Dad 🙄 😛

It's still super early anyway... I'm guessing most of the housing opens up in the summer. Plenty of time to check my options.

Keep in mind that you're probably going to want a car at Stony even you live on campus. It's going to be difficult to get anything done without one.

i went to see Stony Brook and give it a look. Seriously, I do have to live near campus if I get accepted (Im getting ready to apply to start in fall 09). If i get accepted ::crosses fingers::, I dont think a 10 minute drive would be a big deal if Im capable of getting something cheap nearby. Having roommates definitely helps too.

Did anyone check out that SolarSystem website? For some reason it thinks I'm an undergraduate and wants me to get the meal plan. What's the deal? Also, I can't seem to figure our how to apply for on-campus housing.

hey guys

so we've got a really nice 4br house that's a 3 min drive to school etc and we need a 4th guy. rent's 625/mo. plus utilities (approx 100-125) so about 750/mo. we also have a few pictures (not a ton). If anyone wants to go look at the house, feel free to message me. I think the guy said he is available this coming Sun, Mon, Fri, and Sat. let me know if you're interested ASAP. we've only got about a week to find the last guy before we lose the house. also, keep in mind distance from school is important because as of two days ago gas was $3.91/gallon.
