I am very interested in Stony Brook but live in NJ. I thought I read somewhere on here that after your first year if you live in an apartment near campus you can then be considered a NY state resident and pay the resident tuition as opposed to nonresident. Is this true? I tried to search for it on this forum but came up blank which might mean I am mistaken. Thanks

I read that, they do make it tricky. I live in NJ about 10 minutes from the NY state line. Ultimately after school I would like to practice in NYC so I would be intending to retain my residence in NYS after school, which would almost be impossible for me to prove to be considered a non resident. I was hoping someone else had pulled this off before...

They take few OOS. When you go for the interview, they ask you to bring 3 documents proving your a NYS resident like insurance card, driver's license, etc. On my interview, everyone out of the 15 people was from NYS.

I am a NJ resident that is accepted and entering Stony Brook next year. It is very easy to change residency and it also saves you tons of money. You are OOS first year and the next three are In-state tuition, upon changing residency to NY.

In comparison, UMDNJ (NJ residency) tuition is not that much cheaper, than Stony Brook (OOS). This should not be a factor in choosing this school. The statistic that is against you is that they take an average of 3-4 OOS people each class. These two school tuitions are MUCH more affordable than privates schools (NYU, Columbia, Tufts etc..). In conclusion, make this a non-issue.

In order to get residency in NY you have to make like ny is your primary residence by Stony Brook.

Such as driver's license, living there full time, etc.

They said this all at the interview.

Hope this helps.
