Do med schools usually have a space for you to keep your carry on and small backpack?

Yes. Every school will have a closet or other safe storage space for luggage. It is a fact of life that interviewees have bags with them that need to be stashed during the interview day.

I went to one interview where they explicitly said they don't have space for our luggage, but they told us beforehand via email.

If you're staying at a hotel, a lot of them will let you store your luggage at the front desk until you're ready to leave for the airport (yes, even after you check out). Just another option to consider!
