I'm interested in the variety of things you guys do to take your mind off school / work / crazy life stuff.

I try to work out semi-regularly, especially if I can grab an elliptical at the gym, then I can read notes while exercising. Although, if I'm really stressing, I find that sprinting helps clear my mind. Swing dancing is also a lot of fun, lets me hang out with non-vet school people, which tends to be a nice change of pace.

Recently, I've discovered PHD Comics, which has helped me laugh about my indefinitely delayed summer research. 🙄
This one, in particular, I find appropriate: http://www.phdcomics.com/comics/archive.php?comicid=892

So... Where's your happy place?

Not necessarily a "happy place", but I love Dr. Laura, and subscribe to her show so that schedule conflicts cannot occur. She is definitely "not for everyone". I also check out the fan site forum incessantly and have made friends there that really help me when I am down.

I have dogs and occasionally let them remind me that life is really all about throwing & chasing sticks. That is a great stress reducer- they always make me laugh with their antics.

Before Vet School, I quilted. I love designing patterns and then choosing fabrics and cutting them all up into little pieces and putting it together just like I envisioned it. Especially the cutting them into little pieces. It requires such concentration to get them to be the right shape and size, it lets you completely forget stresses. That is why I can't do it in Vet School... too controlling to let those feelings go (even though they are harmful). Sometimes, I hate being a Type A.

Not sure if I have answered your question, but there is no grade on this one- RIGHT?!?! OMG- grades start to matter again NEXT WEEK!

EEEEeeeek!

YOGA! It's amazing for stress release. Don't think you have to be crazy flexible either - anyone can do it. Other stress busters I use:knitting, painting (not great at either, but it's fun to try). Also, accupuncture gives you an amazing feeling of stress release like you just got a long massage. Just some ideas...

Haha.... funny you should mention, as I've had bad (= painful) experiences with both yoga AND acupuncture! Different strokes I guess

I agree with the above that working out and being around animals are two of the best stress relievers for vet students. The former lets you get out all your frustrations (and/or can be done while reading notes), and the latter lets you remember why you're here to begin with. Just this summer I adopted a cat after being pet-less for the last year... and now I have absolutely NO IDEA how I survived my first year of vet school with no pets around!!

I am generally artsy/crafty, but gave up most of it for vet school last fall because there just wasn't enough time. I started sketching during spring break of this past year and realized it was SO cathartic! My skills have improved dramatically because I get more "bang for my buck" when I do take the time to sketch/draw/practice. And I get the same feeling from it that the above quilter gets from her hobby; it's something you can do that forces you to concentrate and let go of everything else for a while.

I do Yoga too...15 minutes a day. Very relaxing.

My dog is probably the best stress reliever. Enough said with that lol.

Exercising in General.

Volunteering actually for me is relaxing. I feel good for doing something just because and it takes my mind off everything mostly.

I do arts and crafts...more scrapbooking than anything. but everything gets so expensive. 🙁

Dr. Laura, very classy.

This is a good positive thread😀 I go wakeboarding when I can. I absolutely love it. There is nothing better than sitting on the back of the boat and watching the sun set or riding to relieve stress. When I am stressed I just need to do this and realize I made a great choice in coming to Australia for vet school.

My dog and hot Aussie boyfriend are also great stress relievers as well😍

I do miss scrapbooking though, but everytime I am indoors I feel I should have my head in a book, and not a scrap book 🙁

Dr. Laura, very classy.

I see where you are trying to be snobbish and nasty here. As I said, she is not for everyone (namely, those who see themselves WAAAAY too clearly in what she is so strenuously working against: shacking up, having babies out of wedlock, mistreating husbands/ wives with selfishness, abortion as birth control, etc...)

Dr. Laura is one classy lady- much more so than Miss Manners, who is so snide occasionally that just reading the column makes me hear the dripping of the poor sap's blood off of the knife she stabbed them with.

To each their own.
